Anti ICE Protests - Pueblo, Colorado

As much as this post is about politics and the current state of America, I am trying to keep politics out of this.
Currently in LA, there are mass riots happening in regards to President Donald Trumps orders to send in ICE agents to deport illegal immigrants. As the protests began to develop, Donald Trump sent in the National Guard. This further escalated situations. Cities across the country and now rallying up and protesting these actions. I saw that there would be a protest happening here in Pueblo, at the County Courthouse. Something inside of me was pulling me to go and capture this moment in our town.
For me, this was a first. I have never documented a protest before. For the most part I try and take a very neutral side when it comes to politics. I feel that there is good and bad on both sides of the pendulum. I also feel that as a photographer, it is my job to try and take photographs that tell the story happening in front of me and keeping it as center point as possible. There was a part of me that wondered if this would take a turn from a peaceful protest and turn into something more. Luckily it never did and everything went as peaceful as possible.
Upon arriving to the courthouse I was there before anyone had arrived. I decided to make a quick lap around the building to check out the light and just feel the presence of the area. As I made my way back around the front of the building I saw a small group gathering. Within about 30 minutes the group grew to about 20 people where they began holding up signs and having conversations. As the courthouse began to open we saw the County Commissioner arrive as well as the Pueblo County Sheriff. They were headed into the County Commission meeting. They met the protestors outside and engaged in conversations. Again, everything went very peaceful and the respect for everyone was top notch.
As I sit back and ponder on these moments I couldn’t help but realize how much I loved this. Being on the street and engaging with the community in something that affects us all was extremely powerful for me. I loved the moments that were happening around me. It made me realize this was how I want to spend some of my time going forward.
Ok, ok, enough talking. This is about photography so let’s get into some pictures. Thanks for reading.
