Picking a Photographer? Here’s What You Really Need to Know

Let’s Be Honest—Picking a Photographer Can Feel Like a Lot

We get it. We understand. From planning a wedding, celebrating a milestone senior year, wrangling the family for updated portraits, or needing content for your business—choosing the right photographer can feel completely overwhelming.

You want someone who can take amazing photos, yes. But also someone you feel comfortable with. Someone who understands your vision, your values and what truly matters to you. You’re not just hiring someone to click a button on a camera. Heck, your phone could do that —you’re inviting someone into some of your life’s most emotional, high-stakes moments.

So how do you make the right call? Let’s walk through it together.

1. Start With the Why—What Are You Really Looking For?

Before you even start browsing websites or asking for referrals, take a second to ask yourself:

  • What’s the occasion? Weddings, engagements, family sessions, senior portraits, events—each one calls for a slightly different energy and expertise.

  • What do you want to feel when you look back at these photos? Romantic? Nostalgic? Joyful? Timeless?

  • Where do you want these images to live? Do you want to hang them on your wall in your home? Do you want a beautiful album that is on your coffee table for everyone to see? Maybe you just want to put the photos on social media and brag to all your friends how good looking you all look!

Once you know your why, it becomes easier to recognize when a photographer’s style and approach line up with your vision.

2. Dig Into Their Style.

Photography isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every photographer has a unique style, and it’s important to find someone whose work speaks to you. Look at:

  • Lighting and tones: Does the photographer’s style have a warm sunset glow to them? Are they more on the bright and colorful side? Maybe their images are dark and moody. You want the photographers style to match your vision. Don’t hire a photographer and ask them to change their style to fit your needs. Find the photographer that screams your vision.

  • Posing vs. candid: Does the photographer only shoot posed photos, with everyone looking into the camera or do they do a more candid, documentary approach? Which do you see in your mind when you look back on your photos? Does your photographer photograph one way or or another or do they mix in both?

  • Editing style: Is their work consistent? When you look at all their work do you know that the same person photographed and edited the photos or is each photo edited slightly different and you are not sure what you are getting with them? Consistency is key to hiring someone. The worst is when you hire a photographer based off a few photos you love, only to have them deliver a bunch that are edited completely different.

And while you're at it—read their About page or bio. Do they feel like someone you’d want around during important, personal moments? That part matters.

3. Look for Real Client Experience

Gorgeous images are important. But so is the experience your photographer provides.

Great questions to ask:

  • Do they communicate well?

  • Are they clear about pricing and process?

  • How do they make their clients feel?

Here at Lepik Photography, we know that trust is everything. We don’t just want to take pretty pictures—we want to walk with you through your whole experience. From the first message to the final gallery, our focus is always on how you feel. We are pretty easy to find online. Go to Google and just search Lepik Photography. You will see a ton of reviews for us, our various awards, articles we have been featured in. We don’t hide anything.

Check the reviews, ask your friends, or just reach out—we’re always here to talk it through.

4. Ask the Right Questions

When you start reaching out, make sure to ask:

  • Are you available for my date?

  • What’s included in your packages?

  • How long have you been photographing [weddings/seniors/families/etc.]?

  • How do you handle challenging lighting, weather, or last-minute changes?

  • Can I see a full gallery?

A professional photographer should be able to answer these with confidence, clarity, and kindness.

Hint: We’ve got answers for all of those questions and a whole bunch more. Just reach out—we’d love to walk you through it.

5. Know the Value (It’s More Than Just Photos)

Your photos are about more than what you see—they’re about how you remember it all.

At Lepik Photography, we believe that:

  • Weddings aren’t just events—they’re legacies.

  • Family portraits aren’t just pictures—they’re time capsules.

  • Senior photos aren’t just announcements—they’re celebrations.

And we want to help you remember it all in the most beautiful, natural, meaningful way.
